Looking Back
A look back at the time of Las Vegas Chinatown
When We Broke the News – China Mama’s Move to Shanghai Plaza
📜 A milestone for Chinatown’s culinary scene
In our “Looking Back” section this week, we revisit a major culinary development in Chinatown that we were proud to announce first. Just over two years ago, in our April 15, 2023, issue, “This Week in Chinatown” was the very first to report the significant news that China Mama was preparing to move into Shanghai Plaza, taking over the former IX Skewer and Bar space.
At the time, we reported:
IX Skewer and Bar – Reliable sources are saying that China Mama has acquired IX Skewer and Bar Will Bring its Chinese Cuisine to the Shanghai Plaza
Insider chatter says that China Mama will now move into the Shanghai Plaza in the IX Skewer and Bar space.
In a stunning development for the culinary scene in Chinatown, IX Skewer and Bar had closed and insiders told us that it had been sold to China Mama, a long-time favorite of the community. This news came just weeks after a fire in which China Mama suffered severe damage to its restaurant, making this acquisition a significant win for both businesses.
The Shanghai Plaza, already known as the busiest strip mall in Chinatown, was set to get even busier with the addition of China Mama’s delicious menu.
Neither of the two businesses was immediately available for comment. IX closed for good on Wednesday, April 12. Although the sale to China Mama hadn’t been confirmed, our sources said it was a done deal.
This strategic move cemented China Mama’s presence in the heart of Chinatown’s busiest hub, and we were glad to be the first to share this exciting news with our readers. It’s a testament to the resilience and evolution of our beloved culinary landscape. Share your favorite China Mama memories with #ChinatownVegas!

Highlighting the people and places that make our Chinatown special.

Chinatown Gripes
Chinatown Gripes: An Urgent Plea for a Lower Speed Limit on Spring Mountain Road
For over a decade, Chinatownvegas.com and its readers have been sounding the alarm about the dangers of the current speed limit on Spring Mountain Road, particularly in the heavily trafficked area between Decatur and Valley View. Our consistent “gripe” has been the critical need to lower the speed limit to 35 MPH.
The tragic events of this past week, with two separate, critical motorcycle accidents occurring within minutes of each other near Spring Mountain and Decatur on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, serve as a horrifying, urgent reinforcement of this plea. While investigations are ongoing, the severe nature of these incidents underscores the perilous environment created by high speeds in an area bustling with tourists, pedestrians, and local businesses.
These aren’t isolated incidents, nor is this a new concern. We remember the devastating September 17, 2021, fatal crash on Spring Mountain Road just west of Decatur Boulevard, as reported by KSNV, which resulted in a fatality. And tragically, we cannot forget the horrific bus stop crash on September 13, 2012, that killed four people on Spring Mountain Road east of Decatur Boulevard, as reported by the Las Vegas Sun. These past tragedies, alongside the recent accidents, paint a clear and grim picture of an ongoing danger.
We understand that changing speed limits involves due process, studies, and various governmental steps. However, given the undeniable history of severe and fatal accidents, and the continuously increasing pedestrian and vehicle traffic in this vibrant tourist and community hub, there must be an avenue for emergency regulation or an expedited process to implement a 35 MPH speed limit.
The safety of our community members, visitors, and local businesses cannot wait. It’s time for decisive action to make Spring Mountain Road a safer place for everyone. The current situation is an unacceptable risk that has claimed too many lives and caused too much suffering. Lowering the speed limit to 35 MPH is not just a request; it’s an emergency measure for public safety that is long overdue.
Share your thoughts and support for safer streets with #ChinatownVegas or email info@chinatownvegas.com. Let’s make Spring Mountain Road safe for all!
