Welcome to This Week in Chinatown!
Welcome back to another sizzling edition of This Week in Chinatown! As triple-digit heat rolls in, our neighborhood is busier than ever — new openings are heating up, soccer fever is taking over local pubs, and the community continues to push forward on big initiatives.
From live music nights and major election updates to the best supermarket deals and honest conversations about pedestrian safety, this week’s guide has everything you need to make the most of Chinatown. Let’s dive in!
Breaking News
Two new initiatives aimed at strengthening Las Vegas Chinatown took important steps forward this week.
The first is the proposed Chinatown Visitor Center, a future resource designed to help visitors and residents discover the businesses, culture, events, and experiences that make Chinatown one of Southern Nevada’s most unique destinations.
The second is the newly formed Chinatown Advisory Council, which has begun recruiting members from across the community. The council aims to bring together business owners, property owners, residents, and community advocates to discuss opportunities, challenges, and long-term priorities affecting the district.

While both initiatives remain in the early stages of development, they represent a growing effort to create additional resources, improve communication, and encourage greater community involvement throughout Chinatown.

Local Love: Alchemist Earns Spot on Review-Journal’s Summer Cocktail List
Las Vegas Chinatown scored a notable mention this week when the Las Vegas Review-Journal included a cocktail from Alchemist Bar and Restaurant in its roundup of 13 must-try summer cocktails across the valley.
The recognition places Alchemist alongside a collection of well-known Strip lounges, resort bars, and other respected cocktail destinations throughout Southern Nevada.

For longtime Chinatown visitors, the honor may not come as a surprise. While the district is best known for its food scene, Alchemist has steadily built a reputation for its creative cocktail program, thoughtful presentation, and unique approach to blending food and beverage experiences under one roof.
The recognition also highlights Chinatown’s continued evolution beyond dining. As the corridor grows, more establishments are earning attention not only for their cuisine, but also for craft cocktails, nightlife, and hospitality experiences that rival some of the valley’s most celebrated venues.
Congratulations to the team at Alchemist on the recognition.

Live Performance Spotlight
Make The Sand Dollar Part of Your Chinatown Night
One of the best ways to experience a full evening in Chinatown isn’t just dinner—it’s building an entire night around it.
Start with happy hour and appetizers, grab dinner at one of Chinatown’s nearly 250 restaurants, explore a dessert spot, then finish the night with live music at the Sand Dollar Lounge. Or do it in reverse. Catch a show first, wander through Chinatown afterward, and discover someplace new. With rideshares typically inexpensive within the district, it’s easy to hop between destinations without worrying about parking or traffic.
This week’s lineup includes local favorites such as Pro Jam, Katrina Bree, The Spectators, Carlos Guerrero & Friends, Eli & The Melomaniacs, and many more. Whether you’re into blues, rock, soul, funk, jazz, or simply looking for a great atmosphere, there’s usually something happening almost every night of the week.
For the complete performance schedule, visit the Sand Dollar Lounge events calendar.

Catch World Cup Fever at Crown & Anchor
As the World Cup kicks into high gear, one Chinatown institution is once again becoming a gathering place for soccer fans from around the globe.
Located at 4755 Spring Mountain Road, Crown & Anchor Pub has long been one of Las Vegas’ premier destinations for watching international soccer. Following the closure of its original Tropicana Avenue location, the Chinatown pub now serves as the brand’s flagship gathering spot for supporters throughout the valley.

Unlike a typical sportsbook, Crown & Anchor delivers the atmosphere many soccer fans are looking for — a true neighborhood pub filled with passionate supporters, multiple viewing screens, traditional British fare, and an extensive selection of beers on tap. Whether you’re following your home nation, supporting a favorite club, or simply enjoying the excitement of the tournament, it’s one of the few places in Las Vegas where the crowd can feel almost as entertaining as the match itself.
Of course, even if soccer isn’t your thing, Crown & Anchor remains one of Chinatown’s most unique establishments. Open 24 hours a day, the pub has become a favorite late-night destination for locals looking for fish and chips, a proper English breakfast, or simply a place to unwind after exploring the district.
With the World Cup now underway, expect the energy inside Crown & Anchor to only grow in the weeks ahead.
Look for a closer look inside Crown & Anchor in an upcoming episode of This Week in Chinatown.
Community Corner
Minja Yan Advances to the General Election
Just days after appearing in an interview with This Week in Chinatown, community advocate and District F County Commission candidate Minja Yan advanced to November’s general election.
Yan finished first in a crowded primary field on June 9, securing a spot in the race to succeed outgoing Clark County Commissioner Justin Jones and represent District F on the Clark County Commission.
Many in the Chinatown and southwest Las Vegas communities know Yan through her work supporting local businesses, economic development initiatives, and community engagement efforts throughout the valley. During her recent interview, she discussed issues ranging from infrastructure and smart growth to supporting small businesses and improving the quality of life for residents.
Her strong primary showing now sets up a November general election matchup against Republican Assemblywoman Heidi Kasama.
Yan’s appearance in last week’s This Week in Chinatown interview came just days before voters headed to the polls, making the conversation a timely look at the priorities and issues shaping the District F race.
Congratulations to Minja Yan and her team on advancing to the general election. We look forward to following the race as it heads toward November.

Looking Back
Chinatown’s Longest Construction Standstill?
If you’ve driven past the northern wing of Spring Mountain Center at Jones and Spring Mountain recently, you may have noticed something strange. From the outside, the storefronts look nearly ready to open. Fresh stucco, new paint, and modern glass storefronts suggest tenants could move in at any moment.
But look closer, and you’ll find the interiors remain completely unfinished.

The anchor store “almost” ready for years
The story dates back to January 8, 2018, when a massive two-alarm fire destroyed a furniture and upholstery store in the plaza, causing a roof collapse and extensive damage to the northern wing. More than 65 firefighters responded to the blaze. Thanks to firewalls, the remainder of the shopping center—including 168 Market and numerous restaurants—was spared.
Over the past eight years, Chinatown has undergone dramatic change. New restaurants have opened, major developments have been announced, and former anchors such as CVS have disappeared, making way for entirely new concepts like Teso Life. Yet the fire-damaged storefronts remain vacant.
While significant exterior reconstruction occurred between 2022 and 2024, work appears to have stalled once again, leaving the project frozen in time.
Is this the longest-running unfinished commercial rebuild in modern Chinatown history? It may very well be.
This Week in Chinatown plans to take a deeper look at the property, its history, and what may be preventing the long-awaited reopening.
Chinatown Gripes
Same Road, Same Problems
As Chinatown continues growing, many of the same infrastructure concerns remain unresolved.
The 45 MPH Problem
Spring Mountain Road functions more like a dense commercial district than a high-speed arterial. With hundreds of businesses, constant turning traffic, and heavy pedestrian activity, many residents and business owners continue to question whether a 45 MPH speed limit is appropriate for the corridor.
Crossing Between Plazas
While recent crosswalk improvements have helped, visitors still frequently cross mid-block between shopping centers. The reality is simple: people naturally take the shortest route between destinations. As Chinatown becomes more walkable, additional pedestrian safety improvements should remain a priority.
Lighting and Visibility
Several stretches of Spring Mountain Road remain poorly lit at night. Better lighting, clearer markings, and improved visibility could help make the corridor safer for both drivers and pedestrians.
The Bottom Line
Chinatown’s restaurants, shops, and attractions continue to thrive, but infrastructure has not always kept pace with the district’s growth. As more visitors discover the neighborhood, addressing safety, traffic flow, and walkability should remain high on the community’s wish list.
