🌟 Chinatown Spotlight: The Golden Tiki
Shining a light on the vibrant heart of Chinatown. Stay tuned for this week’s business spotlight!
A tropical oasis with glowing tiki torches, lush decor, and a starry fiber-optic sky in the heart of Chinatown.
The Golden Tiki
This week’s Chinatown Spotlight shines on a destination that feels like an adult-sized treasure chest: The Golden Tiki. Conceived by visionary nightlife impresario Branden Powers, this isn’t just a bar; it’s a meticulously crafted world that transports you to a fantastical island paradise. Its reputation as a Chinatown gem comes from its stunning, immersive decor, which includes everything from animatronic skeletons to a fiber-optic starry sky.
But the true conversation piece is the infamous collection of shrunken heads, featuring likenesses of famous personalities, adding a delightfully weird and “while you’re here” element to the experience. This week, you have the perfect excuse to explore this legendary spot.
The Golden Tiki is hosting its “9th Island Celebration” on Thursday, August 21st, to honor Hawaii’s statehood and the bar’s anniversary. This “while you’re here” event offers a jam-packed night of entertainment, including live music from Robert Stokes & The Painkillers, authentic hula dancers, a mesmerizing fire performance, and a late-night DJ set by Skyler Villain. It’s a prime opportunity to grab a tropical cocktail, soak in the one-of-a-kind atmosphere, and celebrate in true Las Vegas style.

Swaad Fusion Replaces Yunnan Garden
A major new culinary destination is set to open its doors in the heart of Las Vegas’s vibrant Chinatown, taking over the beloved Yunnan Garden space at 3934 Schiff Drive. Swaad Fusion is poised to bring an exciting new dimension to the area’s dining scene with its authentic Indian flavors. The team is preparing a feast of traditional recipes and aromatic spices designed to delight your senses. With a focus on authentic tastes and a passion for their craft, this new establishment is already creating a buzz.
As they put it themselves: “Your table awaits!” While we’re thrilled for Swaad Fusion, we’re heartbroken to say goodbye to Yunnan Garden, a longtime favorite and the original go-to for Sichuan cuisine in Chinatown, cherished for its fiery flavors and community presence since its early days. Swaad Fusion is a fantastic addition to the incredible diversity of international cuisine found in Las Vegas’s Chinatown.

📜 Looking Back: The Evolution of Shan Tau Square
A look back at the time of Las Vegas Chinatown
*A look back at “vintage” Chinatown*
As one of the original landmarks of Las Vegas’s vibrant Chinatown, Shan Tau Square at the corner of Spring Mountain and Arville has been a witness to the district’s continuous transformation. Named after the city of Shantou, China, this historic plaza has been a staple since its establishment in 1988. While some of its tenants have remained a constant presence, the square is a great example of how the neighborhood has evolved, with a revolving door of businesses reflecting the changing culinary and retail landscape of Chinatown.
Shan Tau Square
Over the years, we’ve seen various restaurants and shops come and go, each leaving its mark on the community. From the early days of family-run businesses to the arrival of modern, award-winning eateries like Chef Brian Howard’s Michelin-level Sparrow + Wolf and Lamaii, Silverlake Ramen, and more, ShanTau Square remains a cornerstone of the area’s rich history and a testament to its dynamic growth.

🚦 Chinatown Gripes: Persistent Community Concerns
This week, we are forced to reiterate a frustrating truth: to date, not a single one of our core community gripes has been corrected. The issues that affect our residents, business owners, and visitors remain unaddressed. Therefore, we are resurrecting these complaints and will continue to do so until action is taken.
- Potholes and Infrastructure: The state of Spring Mountain Road continues to be a hazard, with countless potholes turning this vital thoroughfare into a daily obstacle course. We’ve repeatedly called for urgent repairs and a lower speed limit to ensure pedestrian safety, especially around busy intersections. The lack of response from authorities is not only dangerous—posing risks to vehicles and walkers alike—but also unacceptable, as it undermines the safety and accessibility of our bustling district.
- Vandalism and Graffiti: Our businesses are still being targeted by destructive tagging, a problem that persists despite our previous pleas. As we’ve stated before, this is not art; it’s vandalism that costs business owners significant time and money to clean up and detracts from the beauty of our community. This ongoing disrespect for private property erodes the pride we take in Chinatown’s aesthetic appeal and must be addressed with stronger enforcement and community support programs.
- Traffic and Parking: The gridlock and parking chaos in our plazas remain a daily challenge, frustrating both locals and visitors. Poorly timed traffic lights exacerbate congestion, while inadequate parking options make it difficult for customers to access the businesses that are the lifeblood of this area. This ongoing issue stifles economic vitality and discourages foot traffic, and we urge immediate action to improve traffic flow and parking management to support our thriving commercial hub.
- RTC Buses in Chinatown: We’ve got to give credit where it’s due—the RTC buses are some of the best in the country. They’re clean, modern, efficient, and the A/C is a lifesaver in the Vegas heat. But a few changes could make them work for Chinatown. First, the wait times. Nobody wants to stand around for 20 minutes when it’s 110 degrees outside. Service every 5–10 minutes would make a huge difference—and would definitely get more people riding.
- Second, the bus stops. They’re in all the wrong places. Right now, if you want to go to The Center at Spring Mountain, Chinatown Plaza, or Shanghai Plaza—home to 100+ restaurants—you’re getting dropped off in front of an adult club and then forced to walk 50–60 yards and cross two lights just to get there. That’s not just inconvenient—it’s unsafe.
- Put the stops where the people go. And while we’re on it, let’s be honest: Spring Mountain is a freeway. If this is supposed to be the heart of Chinatown, it should be walkable and safe. Lowering the speed limit would be a good start.
Until these long-standing grievances are resolved, they will remain at the top of our list. The community deserves to have its concerns heard and acted upon. We are hoping that with the formation of the Chinatown Advisory Council, these issues will be addressed on time.
