📰 Breaking News: Another Big Name from Japan is Coming to Chinatown!
Hatoya Kyoto, Japan, Confirmed to Open First U.S. Location in Las Vegas
A major international player in the specialty tea scene is making its way to the Las Vegas Chinatown corridor: Hatoya Ryouyousha (八十八良葉舎), the renowned Kyoto-based matcha stand, is confirmed to be opening its first U.S. location.
The new shop will move into the former Pinoy Cash storefront at 6000 Spring Mountain Rd., Suite 4A.
The signage visible on the building confirms the upcoming opening with a striking “Coming Soon” poster featuring their signature layered matcha latte—a drink instantly recognizable to fans of the Japanese tea shop.
This marks a significant moment for the Las Vegas food scene, bringing an authentic and high-caliber example of Japanese tea culture right into the heart of one of the city’s most vibrant culinary hubs.
What to Expect
Las Vegas matcha lovers can anticipate a menu built around the purity of Kyoto’s green tea, with a focus on showcasing subtle differences between various matcha grades and roasts for an elevated tea experience:
- Signature Layered Matcha Latte: Iconic drink with rich matcha base, creamy milk, and a generous scoop of homemade matcha soft serve ice cream.
- Specialty Sweets: Unique desserts like “Half-Baked Matcha” and Fresh Matcha Terrine.
No official opening date has been announced yet, but with the signage up, anticipation is building quickly for this major addition to Spring Mountain Road.
An Authentic Slice of Kyoto
Hatoya Ryouyousha is celebrated in Japan, particularly at its original Arashiyama (Kyoto) location, for its uncompromising quality. They exclusively use hand-picked matcha sourced from the Uji region of Kyoto Prefecture, ensuring an exceptionally vibrant color and a deep, smooth umami flavor.
We will continue to track this story and provide updates as soon as they are announced. 🤔 What do you think—hype or just rumors? Share with #ChinatownVegasVibes!
This Week in Chinatown: A Culinary Icon is NOW OPEN!
If you, like us, were gutted when we heard that EDO was closing, you know how big this news is. The master himself, Chef Oscar Amador (the genius behind the beloved EDO Tapas & Wine and Anima by EDO), is back with his most personal project yet: Amador Cocina Fina!
The restaurant is NOW OPEN as of this Monday, bringing his highly anticipated vision to life.
Chef Amador is a two-time James Beard Award nominee, and his new spot promises to blend his incredible Spanish training with bold, global, street-food-inspired flavors.
What’s Cooking? A Sneak Peek at the Menu
We got a look at the dinner menu, and it is every bit as inventive and exciting as we hoped:
- PICA Picar: Don’t skip the Croquetas de Wagyu (made with whiskey, chocolate, and cilantro!) or the crispy Oreja Frita (pig ear) with chipotle aioli.
- Crudos & Chilled: Chef Amador is pushing boundaries with dishes like the Bomba de ‘Acai-esque’ Sashimi (featuring roasted guanciale and avocado gazpacho).
- Fuertes: Look for sophisticated entrees like the Chamborino Ternero (braised pork shank) and the elegant Arroz de Carabineros.
- Lo Dulce: The dessert menu is just as creative, featuring items like El Melón (melon, sherry, kakigori) and Tarta Rosa.
Chef Amador’s own slogan for the spot sums it up perfectly: “REBELDE – DELICIOSO – CALLEJERO – ALWAYS.”
Get ready to book your tables! Amador Cocina Fina is officially on the map and ready to be one of your next great Las Vegas dining experiences. Share your thoughts with #ChinatownVegasVibes!

📜 Looking Back

A look back at the time of Las Vegas Chinatown
By This Week in Chinatown Staff
The Night the Blues Came Back to Spring Mountain Road — The 2009 Rebirth of The Sand Dollar Lounge
Spring Mountain Road is world-famous for its authentic Asian flavors — but the soul of Chinatown goes beyond food. To truly understand our neighborhood’s late-night magic, we look back to 2009, when a true Vegas legend came roaring back to life right here: The Sand Dollar Lounge.
The End of an Era (1976–2007)
For more than 30 years, the original Sand Dollar Blues Bar was Vegas’ gritty temple of live music. Since opening in 1976, it has hosted icons like Muddy Waters, B.B. King, and even Mick Jagger, giving local musicians a place to cut their teeth and visitors a taste of raw, unfiltered Vegas.
But by 2007, hard times hit. The doors closed, and with them, an entire chapter of authentic Las Vegas nightlife faded — leaving behind a deep, soulful silence.
The Resurrection on Spring Mountain (2009)
The blues couldn’t stay quiet for long.
In 2009, new owners revived the venue as The Sand Dollar Lounge, determined to bring back its legendary seven-nights-a-week live music tradition — this time, right at the eastern gateway to Chinatown.
The timing was perfect. As the Spring Mountain district grew into a 24-hour dining and cultural hub, the Sand Dollar became its after-hours anchor, uniting two worlds: the soul of American blues and the global flavors of Asian cuisine.
An Anchor for the After-Hours Crowd
The reborn Sand Dollar quickly became the spot for chefs, bartenders, and servers finishing late shifts across Chinatown and the Strip. It was where the city’s hospitality heartbeat gathered to unwind — a slice of pizza in one hand, cue stick in the other, live band on stage.
That blend of sound, flavor, and community helped define what Spring Mountain Road is today: a genuine, local-first destination that never sleeps.
The Legacy Lives On
Since 2015, the current owners have built on that foundation — keeping the dive-bar soul alive while introducing a beloved craft cocktail program and continuing live music every single night.
Looking back, the 2009 rebirth of The Sand Dollar wasn’t just a reopening — it was the night Chinatown gained its cultural anchor. A place where Las Vegas grit meets global rhythm, and where the music never really stopped.

😤 Chinatown Gripes
The Stalled Agenda & Perpetual Problems
Last week, we were stoked to announce that the first phase of the long-awaited Chinatown Redevelopment Project was officially underway — the long-promised pedestrian crossing linking Shanghai Plaza and Chinatown Plaza. The project launched on October 27 and was projected to take approximately 46 days to complete.
Well… guess what? 🚧
A sign is finally up announcing the project, and cones now line Spring Mountain Road from Wynn to Arville. But despite all that visible “setup,” no actual work has started. Zero progress. Just cones and a banner. The community was expecting the sounds of jackhammers and visible improvements — not another silent stall.
This stalled start has only amplified community frustration, highlighting what many residents and business owners already feel: that Chinatown’s infrastructure and safety needs are still stuck in neutral while the rest of the city races ahead.
Here’s the frustrating rundown of the same old issues that demand immediate fixes:
- 🛑 Potholes That Punish: Urgent, comprehensive “patch and repair” work on Spring Mountain Road. Continued vehicle damage, pedestrian tripping hazards, and driver frustration.
- 🚗 Dangerous Traffic Speeds: Lower the speed limit to 35 MPH or less for a safer corridor. Increased risk of serious accidents involving pedestrians and cyclists.
- ⚠️ Unsafe Traffic Flow: Fix out-of-sync traffic lights and enforce “NO left turn” restrictions at high-risk mall exits. Frequent crashes and gridlock, especially during peak business hours.
- 🚧 Pedestrian Crossing Delays? Complete the promised crossing between Shanghai and Chinatown Plazas on schedule. Growing safety risks for shoppers and diners crossing busy Spring Mountain Road.
- 📢 Lack of Transparency: Provide weekly public updates on project timelines and roadwork. Eroding trust in local government and redevelopment promises.
- 🟠 Cone Clutter Without Action: Remove or justify prolonged cone placement when no work is occurring. Visual blight and confusion for drivers and visitors.
The Core Gripe: Symbol of Neglect
What started as excitement for long-overdue improvements has now become a symbol of neglect. The fact that this exact list of safety and infrastructure issues keeps reappearing — week after week — speaks volumes.
The community’s gripe isn’t just about the potholes or speeding anymore; it’s about the lack of visible progress and accountability. We’re tired of orange cones and promises. What Chinatown deserves now is clear timelines, real action, and transparent updates from the agencies responsible for Spring Mountain Road.
