5 Reasons Hatoya’s Arrival is Huge for Las Vegas’ Matcha Scene
One reason it’s such a big deal? Of all the cities—and of all the places in Las Vegas—they chose Chinatown. That alone says something. Chinatown has become the destination for authentic Asian experiences, and now Japan’s beloved matcha brand Hatoya is joining the lineup, adding even more flavor (and buzz) to the neighborhood’s ever-evolving scene.
View this post on Instagram
1. Authenticity, Straight from Japan 🇯🇵
Hatoya isn’t just another trendy matcha café. It’s a well-known Japanese brand recognized for its premium Uji matcha and traditional preparation methods. Their arrival brings a direct taste of Japan’s tea culture to Las Vegas, elevating the city’s matcha game to a whole new level.
2. They Chose Chinatown—Not the Strip 🏮
Of all the places Hatoya could have opened, they picked Chinatown. That decision speaks volumes about how Spring Mountain Road has evolved into a cultural and culinary powerhouse. It’s where authenticity thrives and where locals and tourists alike go for the real deal—not gimmicks.
3. A New Chapter for the Matcha Craze 🍃
Matcha has exploded in popularity over the past few years, but few spots offer a truly traditional experience. Hatoya bridges that gap, bringing the kind of craftsmanship you’d find in Kyoto—ceremonial-grade matcha, hand-whisked drinks, and modern Japanese sweets that balance aesthetics with authenticity.
4. It Strengthens Chinatown’s Global Appeal 🌏
Each new international brand that chooses Las Vegas Chinatown adds to its reputation as one of the most diverse, exciting, and trend-forward cultural districts in America. With Hatoya joining names like SomiSomi, 85°C Bakery, and Tiger Sugar, Chinatown continues to draw global attention.
5. A Win for Las Vegas Food Culture 🍰
Every major food trend has a moment—and Hatoya’s arrival marks the moment when Las Vegas officially enters the matcha elite. From Michelin-starred chefs to bubble tea empires, Chinatown has always been the city’s tastemaker. Hatoya’s debut just cements that status even further.

📜 Looking Back

A look back at the time of Las Vegas Chinatown
By This Week in Chinatown Staff
The Original Lineup: A Groundbreaking “Coming Soon”
Enduring Legacy: A Thriving Landmark
Below this rich cultural imagery, the poster unveiled the initial wave of tenants. This list immediately signaled Shanghai Plaza‘s ambition and its future as a cornerstone of Las Vegas’s Asian culinary scene. Many of these names became instant sensations and enduring favorites:
- 85°C Bakery Cafe: The highly anticipated Taiwanese bakery chain that famously drew lines stretching around the block upon its grand opening.
- Shanghai Taste: A highly acclaimed arrival, quickly establishing itself as a go-to destination for authentic Shanghainese cuisine.
- Kura Sushi: The innovative Japanese revolving sushi bar, which introduced a new dining experience to the city.
- Sharetea: A leading bubble tea brand that helped cement the plaza’s status as a prime boba spot.
- Dagu Rice Noodle and Yummy Rice were also part of this exciting initial roster, promising even more diverse Asian flavors.
While some original tenants, like Dagu Rice Noodle and Yummy Rice, have since moved on or been replaced, the vision symbolized by “Máng Zhǒng” has truly come to fruition. Shanghai Plaza has not only thrived but has grown into one of Chinatown’s most vibrant and dynamic plazas. It continues to attract new, exciting businesses and remains a bustling testament to the enduring appeal of authentic Asian culture and cuisine in Las Vegas.
This poster wasn’t just a marketing piece; it was a prophecy of success, laying the foundation for what has become an indispensable cultural and commercial landmark.

🚧 Chinatown Gripes
THE STALLED AGENDA: WEEK 3 — PROMISES, CONES, AND CRICKETS
Two weeks ago, we were stoked to announce that Phase One of the long-awaited Chinatown Redevelopment Project had officially begun — the long-promised pedestrian crossing linking Shanghai Plaza and Chinatown Plaza. The project launched on October 27 and was expected to take roughly 46 days to complete.
Well… here we are in Week 2, and guess what? Still no visible progress.
Yes, the cones are out. The banners are up. There was even a lone worker spotted on a bulldozer near the Arville and Spring Mountain intersection, but as far as we can see, there’s been zero actual construction. No digging, no barriers being installed, no sign of work crews. If something’s happening behind the scenes, one has to wonder: what exactly have they been doing these past few months since the project was announced?
Earlier estimates projected a 45–46 day completion timeline. But with this silent, stagnant start, the community can’t help but ask — will it really stay on schedule?
THE SAME OLD CHINATOWN GRIPES CONTINUE
This stalled start only amplifies long-standing frustrations from residents and business owners who feel Chinatown’s infrastructure needs are still being overlooked. At the same time, the rest of the city keeps charging forward.
Here’s the updated rundown of what still needs urgent attention:
- 🕳️ Potholes That Punish: Spring Mountain’s cratered lanes remain a hazard for both drivers and pedestrians. “Patch and repair” work can’t come soon enough.
- 🚗 Traffic Speeds Too High: Reduce the limit to 35 MPH or less to make this dense, pedestrian-heavy corridor safer.
- 🚦 Chaotic Traffic Flow: Out-of-sync signals, drivers ignoring “NO LEFT TURN” signs, and endless congestion during peak hours.
- 🚸 Pedestrian Crossing Delay: The promised Shanghai-to-Chinatown Plaza crossing remains untouched — a growing safety concern for those crossing one of the busiest stretches of road in the city.
- 📢 Lack of Transparency: No public updates, no visible timeline, no community communication.
- 🟠 Cone Clutter Without Action: The cones are everywhere — but for what? If no work is happening, they’ve become nothing more than orange decorations of disappointment.
Chinatown deserves better.
