Something historic is taking shape along Spring Mountain Road — and this week, we’re proud to be part of it. A formal initiative is underway that could fundamentally change how the world discovers Las Vegas Chinatown. We’ll be bringing you every detail as it unfolds.
Meanwhile, the neighborhood just had one of its biggest economic weeks in recent memory. The global BTS ARMY descended on the corridor and delivered what one local called “a B12 booster shot” for Chinatown’s small businesses.
On the dining front, Royale Frites is taking over the former Kare space in Shanghai Plaza, Catch & Fire has soft-opened with a refreshingly affordable menu, and KROK is gearing up to celebrate its first anniversary.
Plus a stacked live music lineup at The Sand Dollar Lounge, and some of the hottest grocery deals of the summer at 99 Ranch and 168 Market.
Let’s dive in.
Breaking News
The BTS Effect: “A B12 Booster Shot” for Chinatown’s Economy
The global phenomenon of BTS completely transformed the Las Vegas Chinatown corridor, triggering a historic economic wave for local small businesses.
According to reports by both Fox 5 Vegas and KTNV Channel 13, the massive influx of dedicated ARMY fans created an unprecedented surge in foot traffic for shops and restaurants along Spring Mountain Road. Local spots saw packed dining rooms and long lines as fans traveled from around the world to experience the district’s authentic culinary and cultural scene.
Highlighting the massive localized impact, Chinatownvegas.com’s Joe Muscaglione told ABC Channel 13, “It was like a B12 booster shot for our economy.”
With thousands of fans seeking unique dining experiences outside of the Strip, the “purple wave” proved just how powerful the Chinatown district is as a premier cultural hub—and how a single event can single-handedly supercharge the local retail economy.
News: Shanghai Plaza Shake-Up: Royale Frites to Replace Kare
If you’ve been walking through Shanghai Plaza recently and noticed some changes at the former Yummy Rice space (which later briefly became Kare), we officially know what’s moving in.
Get ready for a serious carb fix: a new French fry-centric restaurant called Royale Frites is officially taking over the location.
As we teased last week in the video edition of This Week in Chinatown, we promised to dig up more details for you. Right now, the owners are keeping additional specifics tightly under wraps. While we don’t have the official menu or opening date just yet, a dedicated fry concept is bound to bring a completely different flavor profile to the plaza’s already bustling food scene.
We are actively tracking this development and will share more details—including potential menu highlights, dipping sauce lineups, and an opening timeline—the second they drop. Stay tuned!
Now Open: Catch & Fire Delivers Premium Sushi & Charcoal Skewers on a Budget
The word is officially out! Following our exclusive scoop breaking the news of their arrival, Catch & Fire has officially soft-opened, and the early buzz is highly promising.
Positioned as a modern sushi and charcoal skewer destination, the restaurant features a clever 3.6.9 menu concept where almost every single item is priced at just $3, $6, or $9. The math is incredibly wallet-friendly: guests can mix and match $3 nigiri, $6 classic rolls, and $9 premium rolls, alongside fresh sashimi, inventive Japanese-inspired plates, and fire-grilled skewers packed with authentic charcoal flavor.
Early diners are already hitting Yelp to rave about the experience, praising the vibrant, upbeat atmosphere, pristine cleanliness, and exceptionally attentive service. Most of all, the food is delivering on its high-value promise. Customers have highlighted the hot, flavorful beef skewers and the freshness of the sushi, with many noting that the approachable pricing makes it effortless to order freely and share family-style with the table.
Catch & Fire opens daily at 5:00 PM—making it the perfect new post-work dinner spot for anyone looking for that rare trifecta of high quality, great variety, and unbeatable value.

Chinatown Spotlight
A new nonprofit-driven initiative aimed at helping visitors better explore and understand Las Vegas Chinatown may soon come to the neighborhood, with ChinatownVegas.com involved in developing the vision.
Early plans are underway for a future Chinatown Visitor Center focused on cultural education, tourism outreach, neighborhood navigation, and support for local businesses throughout the corridor.

Looking Back
Looking Back: The Legacy of Hui Lau Shan in Chinatown
For this week’s “Looking Back” segment, we are taking a trip down memory lane to look at a major milestone in the neighborhood’s dessert evolution: the arrival of Hui Lau Shan.
Known globally for its legendary, mango-centric Hong Kong-style desserts, Hui Lau Shan’s debut in the Spring Mountain corridor was one of the most highly anticipated openings of late 2022. It officially put the district on the map for international dessert trends, drawing massive crowds eager for a taste of their famous mango sago and signature sweet treats.
We are digging into the archives and looking back at the impact this iconic brand had on the local culinary landscape. Want to see the full throwback? Make sure to watch tomorrow’s video edition of This Week in Chinatown (Episode 3, dropping Tuesday, June 2nd), where our host Ruby Ann will be live on the front breaking down the full history and legacy of the spot that kept Chinatown sweet.
Chinatown Gripes
The Gripes Section: The Crosswalk Reality Check
The mid-block crosswalk connecting Chinatown Plaza and Shanghai Plaza was intended to improve pedestrian safety and connectivity between two of Chinatown’s busiest destinations. However, from the beginning, many residents and business owners questioned whether a street-level crossing was the best solution, with many preferring a pedestrian bridge that would completely separate foot traffic from vehicles.
As we’ve mentioned in previous editions of Chinatown Gripes, the flashing yellow pedestrian beacons at this crossing have long raised concerns among residents, business owners, and visitors who regularly navigate this busy stretch of Spring Mountain Road.
On May 13, resident Ryan Tsoi was struck by a vehicle while using that very crosswalk. Thankfully, he survived, but the incident reignited concerns about pedestrian safety along one of Chinatown’s busiest corridors.
The original vision for the area included a pedestrian bridge connecting Shanghai Plaza and Chinatown Plaza, completely separating pedestrians from traffic below. Instead, the corridor was equipped with a street-level crossing and flashing yellow beacons.
While the lights are intended to improve visibility, they still rely on drivers to notice and yield. On a roadway as busy as Spring Mountain Road, many continue to question whether stronger traffic controls, additional enforcement, or other safety enhancements should be considered.
We appreciate the efforts made to improve walkability in Chinatown, but many in the community believe additional safety measures should be explored before a more serious tragedy occurs.
Until then, pedestrians should remain vigilant. Even when you have the right of way, never assume an approaching driver sees you. On Spring Mountain Road, keeping your head on a swivel remains one of the most important safety tools you have.
Another Crash Kills Pedestrian at Spring Mountain and Decatur
Our hearts go out to the family and loved ones of the individual who lost their life Thursday night near Spring Mountain Road and Decatur Boulevard. No policy discussion, no safety debate, no statistic captures the weight of a life lost. We mourn with the community.
Police say the individual was crossing outside of a marked crosswalk, but that detail doesn’t diminish the tragedy — nor does it erase the broader reality that navigating this district on foot remains genuinely dangerous in too many places.
As development and visitor traffic continue to grow along the corridor, many residents and business owners believe pedestrian safety must be treated as an urgent priority — not an afterthought. Safer crossings, better lighting, improved traffic management, and more walkable infrastructure are not unreasonable asks. They are overdue.
The driver was subsequently arrested, and the investigation remains ongoing.
We will continue to cover pedestrian safety in Chinatown until the corridor is safer for everyone who walks it.
