In Breaking News, we’re tracking a storefront switch-up years in the making: DOYA is back as DOYA Gukbap, sharing its Spring Mountain space with LA Koreatown import OB BEAR. Over in Pacific Asian Plaza, our Spotlight lands on Neko Loco Sushi, the value-priced AYCE newcomer sitting alongside two sister restaurants from the same operator.

One of Spring Mountain Road’s most head-spinning storefront sagas has taken yet another turn — and this time, it’s a double announcement.

Earlier this year, This Week in Chinatown reported that Mariscos y Pollos Asados Estilo Sinaloa signage had gone up over the former Doya Jjambbong at 4240 Spring Mountain Rd, #104. That Mexican seafood concept never made it to opening day — the signage vanished almost as quickly as it appeared. Now the storefront has transformed again, and this time it’s staying in the family.

Earlier this year: the short-lived Mariscos y Pollos Asados Estilo Sinaloa signage that briefly replaced Doya Jjambbong.

DOYA Returns — Reborn as DOYA Gukbap

DOYA is officially back on Spring Mountain, but not as the Korean-Chinese noodle house locals remember. The re-concepted DOYA Gukbap (Authentic Korean Pork Soup House) pivots the menu toward traditional Korean bone broths — slow-simmered pork rice soups (gukbap), ox bone soup (seolleongtang), and hearty gamjatang stew — alongside sharing plates like jokbal and bossam.

LA’s OB BEAR Joins the Space

Adding to the surprise, brand-new 3D signage for OB BEAR has gone up directly alongside DOYA on the building canopy. Rather than a separate neighboring tenant, the legendary LA Koreatown pub brand is sharing the space with DOYA Gukbap — bringing its famous Korean fried chicken and pub-style anju to the Spring Mountain corridor under a dual-concept setup.

DOYA Gukbap and OB BEAR are now officially open for dine-in, takeout, and delivery, launching with a $9.99 Soju or Makgeolli grand opening promotion.

Three Neko Concepts, Side by Side

Dragon Factory’s newest all-you-can-eat sushi concept has opened between two of the group’s established restaurants in Pacific Asian Plaza — with a lower-priced menu designed to carve out its own audience.

Neko Loco Sushi, the newest concept from the Dragon Factory restaurant group, soft-opened July 4 at 5115 W. Spring Mountain Road, Suite 119. It sits directly between Sushi Neko in Suite 117 and Neko Supremo in Suite 121 — placing three related Neko concepts side by side in Pacific Asian Plaza.

The suite has been through several names. Before Neko Loco, it was Eki Ramen, and before that the space operated as Neko Ramen. Dragon Factory’s old Eki Ramen web address now redirects visitors straight to the Neko Loco page. The Eki Ramen brand itself did not disappear — it operates further west on Spring Mountain Road, outside Chinatown.

What separates Neko Loco from its neighbors is price. Its all-day all-you-can-eat menu runs $26.95, against the $34.95 that Sushi Neko charges for dinner one door over. The menu promotes the concept as its “No. 1 Loco Value.” The concept is positioned as the group’s value-focused option, aimed at diners looking for a broad AYCE selection at a lower price point. Meals are capped at 80 minutes.

The selection is not thin. Beyond nigiri, seared sushi, and grilled plates, Neko Loco’s “Top 10 Sushi Roll” list leans into spectacle — the Amazing Spider Roll, Demon Slayer Roll, Lobster King Roll, and the aptly named No Name Roll (“MUST TRY!”) all top out at $13-14. Premium add-ons include wagyu beef nigiri, bluefin toro, uni, ama ebi, and scallops. Las Vegas-style creations turn up too — the Hot Cheetos Roll (marked a “MUST TRY!” on the menu itself) and the One Piece Roll among a long lineup of Neko specialty rolls.

The larger point is what this stretch of the plaza says about the corridor. Restaurants on Spring Mountain Road rarely stand still. A ramen counter became a value sushi room, and it did so between two established sushi restaurants owned by the same group — a bet that the block can support a third seat at a lower price.

Sushi Neko. Neko Loco. Neko Supremo. Three storefronts, one restaurant family, and another reminder of how quickly this road rewrites itself.

World Premieres at Las Vegas Little Theater

A Speeding Theatre Over 55 Collaboration

This week, Las Vegas Little Theater presents two brand-new world premiere one-act plays in one evening — a double feature that blends bold storytelling with timely themes.

CHIMPS — An evolutionary drama set inside the Los Angeles Zoo, told from the perspective of those behind the bars. A different kind of zoo story.

TOWN HALL DEBATE — A political discussion for a nervous time. This national dramedy explores right vs. left (or red vs. blue) through sharp debate and deliberation on point of view.

The Comeback of China Mama
On March 29, 2023, a severe kitchen fire shut down China Mama’s original location at Jones Boulevard and Spring Mountain Road. For nearly two decades, the restaurant owned by Ivy Ma had been a neighborhood favorite known for pan-fried pork buns, crispy duck, and Sichuan specialties. The closure left regulars and tourists wondering if the restaurant would return.This Week in Chinatown delivered the answer first. In our April 14, 2023 edition (published April 13), TWIC broke the exclusive news that IX Skewer & Bar in Shanghai Plaza had quietly shuttered on April 12 — and that China Mama had officially acquired the suite to build its new flagship sit-down concept.

April 2023: the first new China Mama signage goes up at Shanghai Plaza.

By late April 2023, official “Coming Soon” banners were posted at 4266 Spring Mountain Rd (#106).

May 2023: crews install the permanent China Mama signage ahead of opening.

China Mama held a formal ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the new location.

June 2023: Ivy Ma and the China Mama team cut the ribbon on the new Shanghai Plaza location.

China Mama 2 opened in June 2023, drawing immediate crowds and completing a remarkably quick comeback following the fire.

For years — week after week, issue after issue — this section has highlighted the same frustrating neighborhood headaches:

• Dangerous Left Turns: Drivers darting out of tight plaza parking lots across multiple lanes of heavy traffic on Spring Mountain Road.
• Mismatched Speed Limits: Speed zones that encourage drag-racing behavior while pedestrian foot traffic climbs higher every month.
• Traffic Signal Nightmares: Poorly timed, unsynchronized traffic lights that create artificial gridlock every afternoon.
• Infrastructure Friction: Bone-jarring potholes, awkwardly placed bus stops, and chaotic rideshare drop-off zones that block active lanes.

We could print the same list again today, because on the asphalt, nothing has changed. Pointing out the flaws over and over without a clear path forward eventually feels like shouting into the void.

So for this week’s Gripes, we have to ask the fundamental question: How does a corridor that welcomes 23.9 million visits a year allow these basic infrastructural issues to persist day after day?

A district driving that much economic energy and cultural impact shouldn’t be left to patchwork fixes and neglected corridor design.

Those conversations also pointed toward something larger: an opportunity to bring people together around a positive vision for Chinatown’s future.

At the request of local stakeholders, business owners, and community advocates, the Chinatown Visitor Center is being formed to help welcome visitors, strengthen connections across the corridor, and highlight the progress and possibilities ahead.

The focus is collaboration — supporting pedestrian safety, traffic flow, parking, neighborhood enhancements, and the continued growth of Chinatown as one of Las Vegas’ most important dining, cultural, and business districts.
