Welcome to This Week in Chinatown!
Spring is turning up the heat along Spring Mountain Road, and so is the neighborhood energy this week. We’ve got a full lineup of live blues and rock at Sand Dollar Lounge every night (zero cover, pure vibes), laughs rolling with Four Old Broads at Little Theatre, fresh signage glowing at Catch & Fire (premium AYCE sushi + charcoal skewers incoming), Petrol Head shifting into daytime mode with weekend Brunch & Beats, killer grocery steals at 99 Ranch and 168 before Thursday’s cutoff, and the Culinary Union pushing hard for permanent “No Taxes on Tips” relief for our hospitality backbone.
But the biggest headline? The Boring Company just confirmed they’re already planning to tunnel the Vegas Loop right down Spring Mountain—at their own cost. No free-mile contest needed and Chinatown’s future just got a lot more connected.
And speaking of connection… we’re also tackling a classic question that still pops up from time to time: “Why is it called Chinatown when there are so many different Asian (and non-Asian) spots?” We’ve got a straight-up, no-filter take in this week’s Gripes section—because the name isn’t about restriction; it’s about history, density, evolution, and welcoming everyone who wants to be part of the scene.
Buckle up, grab your iced tea (it’s warming up fast), and let’s dive in. Share your Chinatown moments with #ChinatownVegasVibes—we love seeing the neighborhood through your eyes! 🌞🏮
Breaking News
🔥 Catch & Fire Lights Up Former Sea Salt Location
Back in January, ChinatownVegas.com reported that a new concept called Catch & Fire was expected to take over the former Sea Salt Live Sashimi space in Shan Tau Square — before the ink on the lease was even dry.
Now, the first major visual confirmation has arrived. Over the past week, large illuminated signage for “Catch & Fire” has been installed on the building, revealing the concept’s full name: Catch & Fire – Premium AYCE Sushi & Charcoal Skewers. The bold blue-and-red facade with that flaming logo is lighting up Arville Street near Spring Mountain Road.
Why it matters: All-you-can-eat sushi remains one of the biggest dining draws in Las Vegas Chinatown, and a new concept combining premium AYCE sushi with charcoal-grilled skewers could quickly become a late-night favorite along the Spring Mountain corridor. The combo of unlimited fresh rolls, nigiri, sashimi, and robata-style skewers screams group-friendly value in a plaza already packed with longtime favorites.
The interior still appears dark and no opening date has been announced, but exterior branding now signals that the project is moving forward fast. Prime spot in Shan Tau Square—steps from the heart of the action.

Catch & Fire, a new premium AYCE sushi and charcoal skewer restaurant, prepares to open in Las Vegas Chinatown.
ChinatownVegas.com will continue monitoring the site and report once construction activity or an opening timeline becomes clearer. Stay hungry—this could be the next AYCE powerhouse! 🍣🔥

Chinatown Tunnel Vision — Major Win: Boring Company Confirms Tunnel Plans Along Spring Mountain Road!
🚇 Transportation breakthrough alert—Las Vegas Chinatown just scored a huge confirmation from The Boring Company!
FOX5 Vegas first reported on the “Chinatown Tunnel Vision” proposal: a 1-mile underground connector parallel to Spring Mountain Road to ease heavy traffic, enhance pedestrian safety at busy intersections, and improve access for the corridor’s 248+ restaurants, shops, and visitors. Local stakeholders (led by Joe Muscaglione) entered The Boring Company’s Tunnel Vision Challenge for a free mile of Loop—but when the top 16 finalists were announced (no Vegas/Chinatown inclusion), it sparked disappointment.
Joe Muscaglione (founder/contributor to ChinatownVegas.com) told FOX5: “Spring Mountain Road is the heart of Chinatown… I just kept putting my finger on the list. I said it’s gotta be there… there’s no Las Vegas there.” He expressed respect for Elon Musk and The Boring Company while pushing for better underground connectivity to the core district.
The turning point (March 5–6, 2026): In a direct social media reply tagging @ChinatownVegas, The Boring Company confirmed:
“You didn’t need to enter – though we are glad you did! As part of Vegas Loop, we already plan to tunnel to Chinatown down Spring Mountain (at our own cost). Once there, will happily add additional useful spurs.”
See the full exchange on X (including your excited reply):
FOX5’s follow-up confirms this as a full win—no free-mile application required; TBC is advancing independently. This aligns with prior plans for 3 Chinatown stations and potential tunneling as early as 2026. Proposed spurs could reach deeper hotspots (e.g., Shanghai Plaza’s 20+ restaurants, Sparrow + Wolf area), making rides practical in Vegas heat and reducing surface congestion without disrupting street-level energy.
The result? Smoother movement, safer walks, and stronger connectivity for one of the valley’s most dynamic culinary/cultural hubs—proof that community voices drive real progress.

☀️ Weather Watch: This Week in Chinatown (Monday–Sunday)
Spring is officially making its presence known in the Chinatown district this week. We are looking at a beautiful string of sunny days with a steady climb in temperatures, peaking in the high 80s by the weekend. It’s perfect weather for exploring the plazas on foot, hitting up outdoor patios for late-afternoon tea or dim sum, or catching a live set at Sand Dollar without needing a jacket. Bring the sunscreen and light layers for those cooler evenings!
| Day | Conditions | High / Low |
|---|---|---|
| Monday, Mar 9 | Sunny & Bright | 78° / 52° |
| Tuesday, Mar 10 | Clear Skies | 77° / 53° |
| Wednesday, Mar 11 | Abundant Sunshine | 79° / 55° |
| Thursday, Mar 12 | Warming Up | 83° / 58° |
| Friday, Mar 13 | Beautiful & Warm | 85° / 60° |
| Saturday, Mar 14 | Weekend Heat | 87° / 62° |

Bottom line & pro tip: This is classic Vegas spring perfection—mostly sunny, dry, and warming fast (average high ~82°F, low rain risk). Layers for mornings/evenings, sunscreen, and water for daytime walks through the plazas, and grab a patio seat early on Friday–Sunday when the heat really kicks in. Ideal conditions for all the outdoor-friendly spots on Spring Mountain! 🌞🏜️

The Fight for Permanent “No Taxes on Tips”
As 2026 tax season ramps up, Chinatown’s hospitality backbone—thousands of tipped workers along Spring Mountain Road—is front and center in the push to make “No Taxes on Tips” a lasting federal reality, not a short-term fix.
Culinary Union Local 226 (headquartered right here at 5241 Spring Mountain Rd.) just hosted a powerful strategy session on Saturday, February 28, bringing together over 100 shop stewards, Congressman Steven Horsford (NV-04), and Assemblymember Linda Hunt. They reviewed the current $25,000 tip income deduction (from the 2025 law), flagged its 2028 sunset clause and other gaps, and mobilized to build support for real, permanent change.
The Union’s “One Job Should Be Enough” Priorities for the newly introduced TIP Improvement Act (Tipped Income Protection and Improvement Act):
• Make It Permanent – Scrap the 2028 expiration so tipped workers aren’t left wondering what happens next.
• Double the Cap – Boost the deduction from $25,000 to $50,000 for married couples to fix the “marriage penalty” that hurts family take-home pay.
• End the Sub-Minimum Wage – Eliminate the outdated $2.13 federal tipped minimum wage nationwide (Nevada already leads by banning it).
• Include Automatic Gratuities – Protect auto-grats (super common for big parties at Chinatown spots) so they fully qualify for the exemption.
With our corridor’s 248+ restaurants relying on dedicated servers, bartenders, and hospitality crews, this legislation could mean more stable paychecks and real relief for local families. The Union is planning a bigger “No Taxes on Tips” event later this month—stay tuned for ways to get involved!
Shoutout to Culinary 226 and Rep. Horsford for fighting for the workers who keep Spring Mountain buzzing. If you’re a tipped worker or know someone who is, share your story or tag the Union—we’re stronger together. 💪🏽🍽️
Looking Back

A look back at the time of Las Vegas Chinatown
Chada Street: A Memorable Chapter in Chinatown’s Dining Story
Before the sleek expansion of Partage took over the space, the storefront at 3839 Spring Mountain Road was once home to a lively Thai restaurant that many longtime Chinatown diners still remember fondly: Chada Street Thai Restaurant & Wine Bar.
Opened in 2015 by Thai chef and restaurateur Bank Atcharawan alongside his brother Bon Atcharawan, Chada Street was ahead of its time for the corridor. It brought authentic Thai street-food style dishes paired with an ambitious wine program—blending bold regional flavors from Bangkok’s night markets with a sophisticated wine list rarely seen in Thai spots back then. The menu emphasized shareable plates with playful, modern energy, quickly becoming a favorite among food lovers exploring Spring Mountain Road’s rapidly evolving scene.
Like many chapters in Chinatown’s fast-moving restaurant landscape, the run was relatively short. Chada Street closed in 2018, and the space eventually became part of the acclaimed French tasting-menu restaurant Partage, which now occupies the location and continues to draw crowds with its own innovative approach.
The story didn’t end for the Atcharawan brothers, though—they remain very much part of Chinatown’s culinary fabric today, just up the road from their former venture.
Bank Atcharawan now operates Jipata, where he continues his creative take on Thai cuisine. Bon Atcharawan runs Lamaii, known for elevated Thai dishes, seafood focus, craft cocktails, and a thoughtful wine list.
In a neighborhood defined by constant reinvention and turnover, Chada Street remains a memorable piece of Chinatown’s dining history—a spot where Thai street food met wine culture, and where two brothers helped shape the modern energy of Spring Mountain Road.
If you remember Chada Street or have a favorite memory from it, share it below or tag us—we love hearing those stories! 🍷🇹🇭
Chinatown Gripes

Chinatown Gripes: Highlighting unresolved issues in Las Vegas Chinatown.
😤 Why is it called Chinatown?
Although we aren’t asked as often as in the past, we still get the question: “Why is the Chinatown in Las Vegas called ‘Chinatown’ when there are so many other Asian restaurants and businesses?”
Our answer has always been: Which Chinatown isn’t? More importantly, which Chinatown doesn’t?
Chinatown is not—and has never been—restricted to one type of business or one ethnicity. To think it should be is a narrow expectation we don’t apply to other neighborhoods. We don’t demand a “purity test” for a Little Italy, a French Quarter, or any other cultural district, so why the different standard here? That line of thinking often stems from a reductive view of what an Asian district is “allowed” to be.
In fact, the word “Chinatown” doesn’t even exist in the Chinese language; it was a word created by non-Chinese for Asians to gather, eat, and often live.
In Las Vegas Chinatown—with more than 248 verified sit-down restaurants—you see that density amplified. Because of the sheer concentration, you get a much larger representation of all Asian cultures (Thai, Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese, Filipino, and more) than in many traditional Chinatowns. That’s not an anomaly; it’s the natural evolution of a thriving, dense culinary corridor.
And yes, as one of the most concentrated dining hubs in North America, you also see non-Asian restaurants opening here. And of course they’re welcome. That diversity is exactly what makes Las Vegas Chinatown unique—welcoming, expansive, and constantly evolving.
So next time someone asks, feel free to borrow our line: Which Chinatown isn’t or which Chinatown doesn’t?
