This Week in Chinatown

Welcome to This Week in Chinatown!
Spring Mountain Road is alive with its signature mix of change and resilience. We say goodbye to two beloved spots this week — Chanko Shabu & Izakaya and GastroPUB Nisei, both closing their doors — but the neighborhood never skips a beat. Chef Brian Howard reminds us why Chinatown remains a culinary powerhouse, live music and theater keep the energy high all week long, and good news on traffic safety is finally on the horizon. The losses sting, but they’re part of the story of a neighborhood that keeps reinventing itself.
And reinvent it does. Claw World is set to make its grand entrance on March 28, bringing a whole new dimension of fun to Spring Mountain Road — a neon-lit, high-energy arcade experience that’s already gone viral before it’s even officially open. It’s the latest sign that Chinatown has evolved into something bigger than a dining corridor — it’s becoming one of Las Vegas’s most dynamic cultural and entertainment destinations. With classic Vegas sunshine dominating the forecast all week, there’s never been a better time to get out, explore, support local, and soak in everything this neighborhood has to offer. See you on Spring Mountain Road.

Breaking News

Breaking News: ChinatownVegas.com delivers real-time updates from the heart of Las Vegas Chinatown.
Lunar New Year Celebrations Light Up Chinatown Plaza and Korea Town Plaza with Massive Weekend Crowds
This past weekend, Chinatown Plaza and Korea Town Plaza were both buzzing with energy as Lunar New Year celebrations brought thousands out to Spring Mountain Road. From traditional lion dances and cultural performances to live music, food vendors, and family-friendly activities, the plazas were packed with color, community, and nonstop foot traffic.

The future of tradition: Young lion dancers take a break for a group photo inside the Chinatown Plaza during the 2026 Lunar New Year festivities.
Chinatown Plaza delivered the classic pageantry and festive spirit the district is known for, while Korea Town Plaza added its own dynamic flair, showcasing the diversity that makes Las Vegas’ Chinatown corridor so special. Together, the two festivals proved once again that this three-mile stretch isn’t just a dining destination — it’s a cultural powerhouse that knows how to celebrate in a big way.
Farewell to a Favorite: Chanko Shabu & Izakaya Closes Its Doors
A quiet void has opened up in the Golden Dragon Park as Chanko Shabu & Izakaya (5808 Spring Mountain Rd) has officially closed its doors. Known for its intimate atmosphere and premium cuts of meat, Chanko stood out to diners seeking a more refined, traditional shabu-shabu experience than the high-volume AYCE spots nearby.
While the “Permanently Closed” status has hit Google and local listings, there is no word yet on what will take over the #103 suite. Fans of the restaurant’s signature broths and izakaya-style small plates will certainly feel the loss of this Chinatown gem.
As the neighborhood continues to evolve with rapid-fire openings nearby, we’re keeping a close eye on what’s next for this space.
GastroPUB Nisei Closes Its Doors on Spring Mountain
As of February 28, GastroPUB Nisei has officially closed its Spring Mountain and Jones locations.
In a heartfelt message to the community, the team shared that a continued decline in day-to-day business and mounting financial obligations made it unsustainable to continue operating in its current capacity. The decision, they noted, was not made lightly.
Known for its Japanese gastropub fare, craft cocktails, karaoke nights, and community-centered vibe, GastroPUB Nisei thanked Chinatown guests, vendors, and partners for their support throughout its run.
While the physical location has closed, the team hinted this may not be a permanent goodbye. They shared that the concept could continue as a pop-up kitchen while they search for a new home.
We wish the team the very best in what comes next.

Spotlight: Chef Brian Howard of Sparrow + Wolf
This week, Chinatown Vegas steps inside the kitchen of Sparrow + Wolf for an exclusive, behind-the-scenes conversation with Chef Brian Howard, one of the culinary leaders helping shape the evolution of Spring Mountain Road.
Filmed in the heart of his working kitchen, our interview captures Chef Howard in his element: focused, creative, and deeply committed to hospitality. Since opening Sparrow + Wolf in 2017, he has built more than a restaurant. He has helped elevate Chinatown’s reputation as a serious dining destination, drawing both locals and visitors off the Strip and into the neighborhood.
Chef Brian on why he chose Spring Mountain Road:
“When I branched out to do my own restaurant, this was the first neighborhood I wanted to be in… I knew I’d be able to cook the way I wanted, not cater to a tourist, and really kind of do what we wanted to do here.”
Known for its ever-evolving seasonal menus, Sparrow + Wolf blends classical technique with global influence. But beyond the food, what stood out most during our conversation was Howard’s belief in community. He speaks candidly about choosing Chinatown, growing alongside the district, and why Spring Mountain Road remains one of the most exciting culinary corridors in America.
Sparrow + Wolf continues to set the standard for chef-driven dining in the area, proof that Chinatown is not just thriving, but leading.

Overall? Comfortable days, cool evenings, and plenty of sunshine — ideal for exploring, dining, and supporting your favorite Chinatown businesses. 🌞
Pro Tip: Layer up for those crisp evenings, but embrace the sunny days for outdoor seating at your go-to spots—patio season is in full swing!

A Smarter Way to Commute to Chinatown
With Spring Mountain Road busier than ever — from ongoing construction to packed weekend crowds — getting in and out of Las Vegas’ Chinatown can sometimes feel like part of the adventure. But there’s a local program many residents and employees may not be taking advantage of: Club Ride.
Run by the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada (RTC), Club Ride is a free commuter rewards program designed to reduce traffic congestion and improve air quality. Members can log carpool trips, bus rides, biking, walking, or even remote work days through the Club Ride app and earn points redeemable for prizes and gift cards. Participants are also entered into monthly prize drawings.
For Chinatown employees who commute daily — especially those working long restaurant or retail shifts — the program offers additional perks like carpool matching and a Guaranteed Ride Home option in case of emergencies.
As Chinatown continues to grow into one of the most dynamic dining corridors in the country, small shifts in how we travel can make a noticeable difference in parking availability and traffic flow. Programs like Club Ride offer a practical way for the community to save money, reduce stress, and ease congestion along Spring Mountain Road.
Sometimes, improving the neighborhood experience starts before you even arrive.
Looking Back

A look back at the time of Las Vegas Chinatown
The Legacy of Bund Shanghai
Location: 3545 S Decatur Blvd (Current home of Saffron)
While the heart of Chinatown beats along Spring Mountain Road, some of its most memorable flavors have resided just around the corner on Decatur Boulevard. Today, 3545 S Decatur Blvd is known for the high-end, plant-based elegance of Saffron, The Vegetarian Eatery, but for nearly a decade, this spacious dining room was the go-to destination for authentic Shanghainese soul food: Bund Shanghai.
A Decade of Flavor (2012–2020)
Established in 2012, Bund Shanghai was a cornerstone of the community. It was known for its modern interpretations of classic dishes, specializing in the mellow, slightly sweet, and aromatic flavors characteristic of traditional Shanghai cuisine.
For years, the restaurant provided a rare bridge for those seeking the specific comforts of East China, from their “Lion’s Head” pork meatballs to their signature pan-fried pork buns.
The Dish We Miss Most
While the menu was vast, long-time regulars still talk about one standout specialty that is nearly impossible to find elsewhere in the valley:
Braised Tofu, Rabbit, and Pork Belly Soup: This was the ultimate “all-in-one” comfort dish. A masterclass in Shanghainese technique, it featured pillows of tofu that acted like sponges for the rich, savory broth. The soup perfectly balanced lean, tender rabbit meat with the decadent, melt-in-your-mouth richness of pork belly. It was a rustic, hearty favorite that truly defined the restaurant’s soulful approach to cooking.

The End of an Era
Bund Shanghai served its last meals in early 2020. Though the restaurant has been closed for several years, its influence remains part of the neighborhood’s culinary history. In late 2021, the space began its next chapter when Saffron, The Vegetarian Eatery, opened, transforming the interior into a lush oasis that continues the building’s tradition of offering unique, destination-worthy dining.
Chinatown Gripes

Chinatown Gripes: Highlighting unresolved issues in Las Vegas Chinatown.
😤 Weekly Recurring Gripes:
Speed Limit Too High
Many business owners and pedestrians continue to question whether the current speed limit along Spring Mountain Road truly reflects the reality of the district. With constant foot traffic, vehicles turning in and out of packed plazas, rideshare drivers stopping abruptly, and tourists unfamiliar with the area, higher speeds create unnecessary risk. Chinatown isn’t a highway corridor — it’s a dense cultural and dining district. Slower speeds would better match the environment and likely improve overall safety.
Ferocious Potholes
The road surface throughout sections of the corridor has become increasingly rough, with deep potholes that jolt vehicles and frustrate drivers. Beyond being an inconvenience, these craters can cause tire damage, alignment issues, and safety concerns — especially at night when they’re harder to see. For a district that draws visitors from across the valley (and beyond), the roadway conditions don’t reflect the quality of the businesses lining it.
Awkward Bus Stops and Pick-Up Spots
Several bus stops and rideshare pick-up areas feel poorly positioned, often forcing passengers to stand near busy driveways or narrow sidewalks. During peak dining hours, this creates congestion as vehicles stack up behind buses or hesitate around ride-share drop-offs. A more thoughtfully designed system could ease traffic flow while also improving safety and accessibility for transit riders.
Badly Timed Traffic Signals
Drivers frequently report long waits at certain intersections, even when cross-traffic is minimal. Meanwhile, short green lights in high-volume turning lanes cause backups that spill into plaza entrances. The inconsistent timing creates frustration and unnecessary congestion — especially during weekend dinner rushes when every minute counts.
Update: We reached out to Commissioner Justin Jones, who has been a strong advocate for Chinatown and spearheaded the redevelopment project. We were informed that in the next phase, the speed limit will be reduced to 35 mph!
